Section Classification Calculator
Classify a symmetric I/H (W-shape) section's flange and web as Class 1, 2, 3 or 4 under bending, and check the Class 4 (slender) boundary under axial compression, to CSA S16.
Standards used on this page:CSA S16-19 Clause 11 / Table 2 (bending: flange 145/170/200÷√Fy, web
1100/1700/1900÷√Fy) · Table 1 (axial compression Class 4 boundary:
flange 200÷√Fy, web 670÷√Fy).
Note: idealised (sharp) corners. Class 1 = plastic, Class 2 = compact, Class 3 =
non-compact, Class 4 = slender. For pure axial compression CSA distinguishes only non-slender (Class 3
or better) from Class 4; the Class 1/2 sub-grades apply to bending. Combined bending + axial is out of scope.
